Wowicala Iciwayankapi

This large scale painting was created for an exhibition in South Dakota titled “Takuwe,” which looks at the historic moments surrounding the massacre at Wounded Knee. I am a descendent of a woman who survived that horrific experience, and I felt responsibility to my relatives to contribute my artistic effort to sharing a perspective that derives from a collective viewpoint as Lakota people. As a contemporary artist, it is intentional that I put forth an honest voice in my work and include elements that emphasis the binary realties we exist within as modern Native/Indigenous people. This painting encourages the development of critical thought around images and perspectives that define signification.
